James Stevens
Portrait of James Stevens

I provide open-ended psychotherapy and aim to sustain a clinical setting in which patients can trust they are receiving an excellent standard of care. I have substantial experience in the National Health Service and in private practice, working with a wide range of psychological and interpersonal difficulties. Therapy is a demanding undertaking: patient and psychotherapist work together to face the most painful aspects of experience, in search of relief from mental pain and a fresher perspective on patterns of living and relating. I do not provide quick-fix answers, directive advice, or hastily formed diagnoses. My aim, instead, is to establish meaningful, lasting change through deep listening, in an atmosphere of imaginative insight and genuine respect for each person's particular history.

One-to-one talking therapy in a confidential setting is the primary form of treatment I offer, in both long and short-term work. Some people prefer shorter-term work focused on a particular issue; others, having made progress toward specific goals, choose to continue and broaden the scope of the work. Some return after a break, when they need further support.
